Hi Joe, I haven't got round to looking into little green patch yet.
It seems to have slowed down on Facebook rather than snowballed.
Rolling stones gather no moss. I'm going to Oz for a 3 day business trip.
Probably be office bound the most of it.

re: online petition is just another word for SPAM

Depends on how it's done. I signed in to receive them from GetUp, Avaaz and Amnesty International, so their sending them to me isn't SPAM, and they don't just send out emails to everyone in Cyberspace. GetUp and Avaaz encourage you to email your friends, though, so you could end up getting SPAMed by the people who signed up in the first place (or someone further down the line).

Andy - how's finding out about 'Lil green patch' going? Found out anything worth reporting yet?

That's a very valid point Joe :) It's always handy to have someone who knows the legal ropes around. I was a approached by some WWF volunteers just the other day who wanted me to make a donation to save the orangutans and sign a petition. But I still wonder. Even in such a well-known organization, the hearts of the volunteers are in the right place, but do they have the skills or legal knowledge to actually make any real impact ?

I'm of the same generation and feel much the same way. I had hippie parents (I still do) but have not been as involved in these issues as them, although I've signed a lot of petitions and been on a lot of protest marches, written the odd letter to my local member and had some involvement in raising awareness of these issues at Clean Up Australia or where-ever.

There are some online communities making real changes, organising online petitions and email campaigns and lobbying ministers. I wish they would consistently verify email addresses though, I'm sure the politicians are as aware as I am of how meaningless a petition is where none of the email addresses were verified.

I'll be interested to see what you find out about 'lil green patch' and the like.
